چکیده

This paper summarizes recent advances of the NeuroProbes project, a 4-year Integrated Project funded by the European Commission under the Information Society Technologies (IST) topic of the 6 Framework Program. NeuroProbes aims at the development of multifunctional probe arrays comprising a 3-dimensional (3D) arrangement of recording and stimulation electrodes in conjunction with microfluidic functionality and integrated biosensors. The silicon based probes with planar electrodes are available as single shafts, in a comb-like arrangement and as 3D arrays for both, acute and chronic applications. The modular system concept and respective fabrication technology allows for a slim design of the 3D array conducive to its floating application. Initial recording and stimulation experiments demonstrated the feasibility of the concept and showed stable recordings of single and multiple unit activity as well as local field potential measurements over a time frame of one week.

Multi-electrode arrays technology for the non-invasive recording of neural signals: a review article

The recording of electrophysiological activities of brain neurons in the last half-century has been considered as one of the effective tools for the development of neuroscience. One of the techniques for recording the activity of nerve cells is the multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are usually employed to record electrical signals from electrogenic cells like neurons o...

Investigation of a New Electrode Array Technology for a Central Auditory Prosthesis

Ongoing clinical studies on patients recently implanted with the auditory midbrain implant (AMI) into the inferior colliculus (IC) for hearing restoration have shown that these patients do not achieve performance levels comparable to cochlear implant patients. The AMI consists of a single-shank array (20 electrodes) for stimulation along the tonotopic axis of the IC. Recent findings suggest tha...

Closed- and Open-loop Deep Brain Stimulation: Methods, Challenges, Current and Future Aspects

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is known as the most effective technique in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson disease (PD) and epilepsy. Relative healing and effective control of disease symptoms are the most significant reasons for the tangible tendency in use and development of this technology. Nevertheless, more cellular and molecular investigations are required ...

Closed-Loop, Open-Source Electrophysiology

Multiple extracellular microelectrodes (multi-electrode arrays, or MEAs) effectively record rapidly varying neural signals, and can also be used for electrical stimulation. Multi-electrode recording can serve as artificial output (efferents) from a neural system, while complex spatially and temporally targeted stimulation can serve as artificial input (afferents) to the neuronal network. Multi-...
